The American Class

La classe américaineAmongst the many paradoxes that exist in France, it is quite odd that one of the most buzzed movies never even made it to the silver screen. La Classe Américaine was broadcasted only once in 1993 on the French TV channel Canal + (similar to HBO), on new year’s Eve.

In 1993, Warner celebrated its 100th birthday and authorized Canal + to make a compilation of its back catalogue to create a tribute documentary. But the people in charge, Michel Hazanavicius and Dominique Mézerette decided to re-write an original scenario by re-dubbing the sequences. The clever editing and hilarious dialogues soon became cult. The movie first circulated on physical formats (VHS then DVD), copied by the thousands and spread nation-wide. Now a digital version exists and several abstracts can be found on Youtube and Dailymotion, some of them subtitled in English.

La Classe Américaine fused contemporary pop culture and you can find references to it in several popular creations such as the French versions of Grand Theft Auto IV and Battlefield Bad Company.
